Foundation Grants – Text

Foundation Support

Special thanks to the following foundations for their generous support of voiceofsandiego.org.

Ethics & Excellence in Journalism Foundation

Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation invests in the future of journalism by building the ethics, skills and opportunities needed to advance principled, probing news and information. EEJF does so through contributions to media institutions and journalism schools nationwide, primarily in areas of investigative reporting, youth education, professional development, and special opportunities.

Girard Foundation

Girard Foundation is a private, family foundation established in 1986. Our mission is to improve K-12 education in San Diego County by supporting projects and programs for systemic change.

John S. and James L. Knight Foundation

The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation is a national foundation with local roots. We choose, as the Knight brothers chose, to seek opportunities that can transform both communities and journalism, and help them reach their highest potential. We want to ensure that each community’s citizens get the information they need to thrive in a democracy.

Nicholas B. Ottaway Foundation

The Nicholas B. Ottaway Foundation makes contributions to journalism programs or projects which improve the quality of journalism in all its forms or defend freedom of the press anywhere in the world.

Open Society Foundations

Open Society Foundations work to build vibrant and tolerant democracies whose governments are accountable to their citizens. On a local level, Open Society Foundations implement a range of initiatives to advance justice, education, public health, and independent media.

Panta Rhea Foundation

Panta Rhea’s mission is to provide grants for a wide array of charitable and educational purposes that support the sustainability of present and future generations.

Sempra Energy Foundation

The Sempra Energy Foundation was founded by Sempra Energy. They are founded on the principle that they can help make a difference by creating innovative partnerships in their communities to produce sustainable and responsible change. They are dedicated to investing in creative ideas and innovative approaches for sustainability and the advancement of new environmental and energy technologies; infrastructure development and improvement; and support for people and communities in need.

The Legler Benbough Foundation

The Legler Benbough Foundation believes that research science and the cures and products that it produces make up a major part of the San Diego economy and are, therefore, of concern to all of us. It is important for the continuing support of science that the public understand the research and its implications. In supporting a science writer for voice, the foundation hopes to expand the resources for this information and to create a platform for the public discussion of the issues involved.

The San Diego Foundation

The San Diego Foundation is San Diego’s leading resource for information about charitable giving and community needs. We encourage and support meaningful dialogue on issues affecting each of our communities and work with philanthropists to develop creative solutions to meet critical community needs.

Our IRS determination letter can be viewed online for verification of our 501(c)(3) tax status.
