What follows is a copy of the email I sent to the U-T San Diego. Sad days. I hope Mr. Manchester will go back to selling real estate:
My husband and I are a mixed marriage: one red, one blue. We have subscribed to the Union-Tribune since 1959, so it saddens me greatly to cancel our subscription. As the Democrat in our family I have enjoyed our years as readers of our local paper, though sometimes disagreeing with its politics. But the opinion page in in Sept. 7′s paper screamed at me in headlines with a larger type than that of the front page headlines. I get it. Someone there hates Barack Obama, hates the Democrats. That page looked like the writing in the kind of extremist newspaper I don’t want to read.
After years of trying to convince friends that it was important for them to subscribe to their local paper, I’m the one leaving. My husband doesn’t object because he can read rational political commentary in the Wall Street Journal, our other daily paper.
I miss Helen Copley and David Copley, Neil Morgan, Tom Blair and will be sad to no longer read Diane Bell and Matthew T. Hall and everyone on the sports page.
Judith Wilson lives in San Diego.
