Chargers failed to play Marty Ball

Published: Monday, January 15, 2007 11:39 AM PST

When the Chargers lose, head coach Marty Schottenheimer is often unfairly blamed for playing “Marty Ball.” But the Chargers lost Sunday to the New England Patriots because they didn’t play “Marty Ball.”

The true identity of “Marty Ball” is ball security and field position. Schottenheimer's critics think it’s playing not to lose, but that’s a misnomer.

The Chargers didn’t take care of the ball and didn’t take advantage of early field position against the New England Patriots in the AFC Divisional Round playoffs Sunday at Qualcomm Stadium. As a result, the AFC West champions saw their season come to an end with a 24-21 upset loss to the Patriots despite a 14-2 overall record and 8-0 home mark in the regular season that earned home-field advantage throughout the playoffs.

In Cleveland, Schottenheimer let Bernie Kosar sling the ball, but his teams fell victim to Hall-of-Fame quarterback John Elway. In Kansas City, his teams were run-oriented with big backs, so controlling the ball was smart football.

But Schottenheimer will no doubt take the brunt of the blame for the Chargers’ loss that dropped his playoff record to 5-13.

“It’s the nature of the business,” said Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson. “It shouldn’t be just the coach taking a lot of the heat, it should be the whole team. The coach wasn’t out there tackling and running and catching and throwing and blocking.”

In the first quarter, virtually the entire game was played in the Patriots’ end of the field, but the Chargers failed to score even a field goal.

The Chargers intercepted Tom Brady three times, but even when Marlon McCree picked off a Brady pass, it worked against the Chargers. McCree fumbled to give the ball right back to the Patriots with a first down in scoring position at the Chargers‘ 32-yard line. The Patriots scored a touchdown five plays later and tied the game 21-21 on a two-point conversion.

The Chargers also turned the ball over on a fumbled punt that led to a field goal and quarterback Philip Rivers was intercepted on a pass in Patriots’ territory. The Chargers committed foolish personal foul penalties that helped the Patriots.

The simple fan will blame Marty Ball, but in reality the Chargers lost because they didn’t play Marty Ball.

The Spanos'are classless losers. Do you remember how they dealt with Mike Riley? USC wanted him as their head coach, but the Spanos'would not let them talk to him. USC hired their second choice, then Riley immediately gets fired. What class... And now Dean fires Marty after all the other teams have hired their new head choices - and you know a couple teams easily would've made Marty their first pick - Classy guys those Spanos'. And what quality head coach is going to want to work under arrogant losers Aj, Alex and Dean?

Dean Spanos and Co. are complete IDIOTS!. Bobby Ross all over again. Ross took the Chargers to the playoffs, then their only Superbowl appearance. Then Ross has a so-so 8-8 season and Spanos et. al. want to start calling all the shots-i.e. fire all the assistant coaches. Yeah-right-good move. Ross says goodbye and then we get 10 straight LOSING SEASONS! Well guess what-Marty goes 14-2, and GM AJ Smith wants to start calling the shots-on who gets hired as assistant coaches-bye bye Marty. Get ready for 10 more LOSING seasons-just like 96........

Heck, the Spanos have been doing this since they bought the team. What was that other guy they tossed out like the garbage? Oh yeah.. Air Something -or-other...Coryell... What an inept ownership we have here.

Marty took the Bolts as far as he could. He can't win in the playoffs. I've felt this way since he was hired. A young gun will take them to the next level. Just don't hire Steve Mariucci.

Poppa, I am sure the Spanos crime family will get a new "young gun" to take the Bolts all the way....like when they got that young gun...named ...Kevin Gilbride..remember him...he was a real winner...then they had Al Saunders...and that guy that is not Boston Colleges coach....and Riley......I am sure that Spanos and Co. will NOT get anyone who can win. They hire losers and fire winners. Maybe you were not around in 95 when Ross and the Bolts went to the Show-I was-the excitement was unlike anything this city has ever seen. Then they fire Ross.

If everything follows form, shouldn't Mark Fabiani and Bob Kittle blame Mike Aguirre for the latest Charger PR nightmare? I think that Dean Spanos should hire Chuck Long away from SDSU. Long has the kind of success record that Mr. Spanos appreciates.

There was a gushing 3 page love-fest in the U/T on Thanksgiving day for the two young Spanos boys "working" for the Chargers and being "groomed" to take over some day...what the heck, co-head coaches? Or have no head coach and just make one O-coordinator and the other take D. If the Spanos' know one thing, its football!!! (har har har har...

This letter sounded good right up to the point where the Chargers were referred to as "perhaps the most talented team in football." At that point, I simply had to stop taking it seriously at all. Satire, perhaps?

Just another demonstration that these are not the "San Diego" Chargers. They are the Alex Spanos Chargers..."San Diego" has no votes. San Diego cannot hire, fire, draft or do ANYTHING except pony up the taxpayer's money to support an entire roster and management of multi-millionaires.

Having read about all the circumstances surrounding the firing of Marty and having now had time to form an opinion, I now firmly believe that, after 200 career wins, 2 division titles in the last 3 years, and a 14-2 record last year which was not only the league's best for the year but the BEST Chargers record EVER only to get the slap in the face "extension", Marty did indeed brilliantly engineer his own firing and decide to leave the Chargers all the while banking $10,000.oo per DAY of the Spanos's money to play golf.
