Chargers' True Draft Day Savvy

By Tom Shanahan

Tuesday, April 24, 2007 | Their names are Nate Kaeding, Nick Hardwick, Shaun Phillips, Michael Turner and Shane Olivea.

Three years ago, they sat far removed from the fanfare of the NFL's draft day green room in New York. They simply picked up the phone at home when Chargers general manager A.J. Smith called and told them they were on their way to San Diego as middle- or late-round draft picks.

Tom Shanahan

Each year the NFL invites marquee draft prospects to New York to wait in the green room until their names are called and they can be paraded up on stage. They get the attention and the money.

But if you really want to see the value of an NFL team's two-day draft on Saturday and Sunday, look at the players they take in rounds three through seven. It's particularly true for a rebuilding team.

In 2004, the Chargers drafted eight players that are still with the team in roles ranging from Pro Bowler to valuable backup. In addition to quarterback Philip Rivers in the first round and defensive end Igor Olshansky in the second round, six more players came from rounds three through seven.

The six choices turned out to be Iowa kicker Nate Keading, a third-round pick; Purdue center Nick Hardwick, third; Purdue outside linebacker Shaun Phillips, fourth; Northern Illinois running back Michael Turner, fifth; Ohio State offensive tackle Shane Olivea, seventh; and Nebraska defensive lineman Ryon Bingham, seventh.

Rivers, Kaeding and Hardwick earned Pro Bowl bids their third season. Olshansky, Kaeding, Hardwick and Olivea have been starters all three years.

Phillips emerged as a starter his third year, Turner could be a starter for many other NFL teams and Bingham contributed valuable minutes as a backup when the Chargers suffered injuries last year in their defensive line.

The Chargers' recent draft success, Smith and his scouts believe, is their ability to work together in the later rounds. The scouts do the legwork and Smith and assistant general manager Buddy Nix have their own eye for talent to make the final choices.

"I know a lot of people have asked us if we have some magical touch or something," Smith said. "I don't think we do. We work hard like everyone else. We approach it very seriously. We have a plan and we execute it very well. We're all looking at the same pool of players each and every year. I just think that we've got a lot of good guys, a lot of experienced people. We work well together and make the right selections."

The Chargers don't draft until the 30th pick of the first round -- barring a trade that would change the order -- but don't overlook the players they take in later rounds. Maybe that's where they'll get the wide receiver -- this year's draft is deep in wide receivers -- that can add to the passing game.

The Chargers have eight picks in all, including one in the second (62), two in the third (93 and 96), one in the fourth (129), two in the fifth (167 and 172) and one in the seventh (240).

So the draft prospects you see in the green room Saturday morning aren't necessarily the building-block players that put a team over the top as a playoff or Super Bowl contender.

Chargers running back LaDainian Tomlinson was one of those green room players when the Bolts took him with the fifth pick of the 2001 draft. And because LT turned out to be the impact player, the Chargers are one of the teams that can win a Super Bowl in 2007.

But the Chargers didn't become a winning team until they started hitting it big in rounds three through seven in 2004.

In LT's first three seasons, the Chargers had one .500 season (8-8 in 2002) and no playoff appearances.

In LT's three seasons since the 2004 building blocks draft, the Chargers have had three straight winning seasons and two playoff appearances in 2004 and 2006.

If the Chargers ever win a Super Bowl, Tomlinson will be a major reason. But he will be only one reason.

Hey Tom= Draft picks mean zero without good managment and coaching (who rememebrs that #1 pick named Leaf??). I don't know how long you have been aroudn this town, but we had a good thing going back in te mid90's with a guy named Bobby Ross, that ended after the fools that run the Chargers (Spanos) fired Bobby after 3 play off and one Superbowl appearance within 4 years. The came 10 years of hell. I am telling you right now-that will repeat itself yet again with Turner. Lights out-Charger party is over-ended last season.

A DIFFERENT TAKE: Shane Olivea (#70) is an average player at best. He truly benefits from being on a good team with an offense that can be unpredictable. In the playoffs, New England exposed him and he [Olivea] nearly got our quarterback killed! A fact that defensive teams will see on film this year. Olshansky is OK, but you can hardly credit him for the Chargers 14-2 record. Solid player; period. Kaeding is CONSISTENT, but I am still hurting from that playoff loss to the Jets. Hmmnn...the rookie kicker from New England didn't seem to be anything but PERFECT when they played the Bolts last year in the playoffs. Hardwick: Great player, physical and a good team guy. Hmmnn, seems he benefited from good coaching given the fact that he was drafted as a definsive lineman. But what the heck, I'll give you that one.

I am as skeptical as the next chargers fan with the coaching changes that have been made, but how can anyone make the claim that "Charger party is over" with a team that has this much talent? I feel that Norv deserves a chance, he has not been the head coach of a team with talent before so I feel that his past coaching record does not mean much. I will say that any direction away from Marty is a good one as he was a great hinderance on the Chargers. Go Chargers!!!!

I can make the claim that the "Chargers party is over" very easily-I was here in 93-95 when we had great teams with tons of talent-look what happened. Spanos can make anything he touches turn to coal. Norv Turner has never done jack. You sound like the guys that were head cheerleading for Gilbride (OMG-What a LOSER), Al Sauders, Dan Henning (another WINNER-yeah right!), wow, how many others have there been??? This club is turning into the Al Davis Franchising of So Cal......

Billy Bob, put down the moonshine, Marty "the jinx" is gone. AJ will add a few more pieces to put the Bolts over the top. These are very exciting times to be a Charger fan!

The fact people are comparing this team to that of the mid 90s cracks me up. Does anyone remember that our super bowl team of 94-95 made it to that said bowl by the skin of their teeth (one missed field goal) we were 8-8 and 11-5 in our play off years, during a time when the AFC was todays NFC. Please, we have much, much, much more talent now then we ever had. And a superstar in LT who will be re-writing the record books for years to come. It is downright moronic to compare this team to the underachievers of yester year.

re: castanedacomm, Hardwick wasn't drafted as a D-Lineman, I saw the draft live and he was drafted as a Center. Played one at Purdue for Brees. He came in to Purdue as a wrestler and was converted during college. Deilman was signed as a d-lineman but not drafted (he went undrafted) then he made the switch to the O-Line later in his career.

I agree with BoltBeliever, BBH put the moonshine down. This is an exciting time for Charger fans. The mid 90's teams were above average at best, and that only lasted for 2 years. This team is young and talented on both sides of the ball. Proof: last seasons Pro Bowl Team. So I'm going to go work an OT shift(underpaid by the way) to pay for my season seats. Then work a few more OT shifts and get ready for trips to Green Bay and KC. Then with some playoff luck this season head to Phoenix. Then when I'm 54 and retired, travel with my favorite team more often. With love BBH, from a DOWN but not out sdff.

Man-I cannot believe how you guys think this team is better than the Stan Humphries team. I mean that team went to the SUPERBOWL. The play offs leading up to that, the field goal over Miami-Gibson knocking down the Neal O'Donell end zone pass on the LAST play of the AFC Championship game to go to the SHOW! Nothing will ever compare to that season and that team. It was GOLD baby. I have 20 bucks that says the Chargers do not go better than 8-8- then finish 3 or 4th in the AFC West. Then they fire Turner-hire another coach, fire him after 3 months and then repeat this cycle for 5 years.

Lighten up. I thought I was a doomsday fan 'till I read these postings. Every season is a new one. Yeah, Norv is as exciting as wet toast. Give him 2 yrs before you crucify him. Most fans wanted someone else, but it's who we have. It should be good for Rivers growth. Put your POSITIVE thoughts into the Draft. We need a quality OT to serve as insurance behind McNeill and Olivea. We need a Doug Wilkerson/Ed White horse to step in for Goff when we run him off. We need 2 WR, 2 safeties, and 2 LB. We need to find another RB who can play. Losing Turner leaves us very vulnerable until we find an adequate backup. DRAFT! It's what AJ does best. He's not here for his people skills.

I'll take that bet!!Wait I have lost $300 per paycheck compared to 2003. Thats no BS. I can't afford the bet. I'll spend a day away from my kid for this, $20 bet BBH. Stan Humphries over Phillip Rivers, love him but now I know you are wacked. Chargers of this era will be Champions for the first time since the 60's. The AFC was weak in 1995. Norv Turner with talent has 3 Superbowl rings.

BBH. You remind me of a Saturday Nite Live character by Amy Pohler. "Debbie Downer" finds the negative in everything. Wha Wha Wha Wha! Luckily, nothing you say matters. In reality, nothing any of us say here matters! What does matter, is AJ being left alone by the SPANOS family to do his job. He does make mistakes. He is human (as far as I know ). But his track record the last half dozen years is stellar. The facts are hard to dispute. Nearly two dozen contributing draft picks, half of whom are pro-bowl caliber or bowl nominees. Winning record the last three years. Top ranking offense that is still youthful and set to get better. Top ranked defense that needs just a few pieces to match our offense. And, now a coach who will keep the ship on course.

Hey hillbilly bob, why don't you chiefs fans go back to KC? To anyone else down on the Chargers, find another team and quit pretending to be a Charger fan. It's an insult to us real football fans, regardless of teams. Or better yet, just respond to Chief web sites, you'll be better suited there.
