Merriman Matches Heart with Deeds

By Tom Shanahan

Tuesday, July 3, 2007 | In today's lucrative pro sports world, many athletes seek a charity to support in the name of their foundation.

Fundraising efforts of charities, obviously, benefit from the name recognition that a high-profile athlete provides.

Tom Shanahan

So if there was a match made in public relations heaven, it was Chargers outside linebacker Shawne Merriman with San Diego homeless projects. Merriman, after all, spent time in his youth with his mother in homeless shelters in Washington, D.C.

But it wasn't a marketing wiz that brought together Merriman -- a two-time Pro Bowl pick his first two NFL seasons -- with San Diego's Alpha Project for the Homeless.

"He found us," said Bob McElroy, president of the Alpha Project. "He just showed up unannounced one night."

And he's been there many more nights since then. Life threw knives at Merriman early on, but rather than be cut by the blades, he has grabbed them by the handles and made them tools.

"He doesn't come with an entourage or with the media," McElroy said. "He sits on the end of a bed and spends hours talking with homeless people. Some of the things he's done for us, I've wanted to send out a press release. But he won't let me."

Merriman, who turned 23 in May, is widely regarded as the best outside linebacker in the NFL as he enters his third NFL season. One reason -- two, actually -- is he can speed rush an offensive lineman one play and bull rush him the next. He's equally effective at both techniques, so pick your poison.

But when it comes to his support of homeless causes, he's strictly a read-and-react player. Even as a student at University of Maryland, he started a winter coat drive that has continued after he left for San Diego.

In early March 2006, Merriman learned that a San Diego winter homeless shelter would be closed down 20 days early, confronting people with rainy weather. The shelter needed $95,000 in donations to remain open, and Merriman's check for $7,500 was the largest donation that met the budget shortfall.

Merriman said at the time, "I experienced homelessness several times when I was a kid and I now want to help people. It's a tough situation to be in. Sometimes all it takes is a little push to help people turn things around. I want to do all that I can to help."

That was shortly after Merriman's first pro season with the Chargers as the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year. His nickname, "Lights Out," had gained trademark recognition around the league.

Since then, he has established the Lights On Foundation that targets homeless people and families. Last weekend, he sponsored a free football clinic on Friday, a Community Day Saturday afternoon and a Comedy Jam at 4th&B Saturday night.

The free clinic was for youths ages 8 to 12 at the Joan Kroc Salvation Army Center on University Avenue. The kids were invited by the Salvation Army and the Alpha Project.

The Community Day was at the Children's Learning Center and the Door of Hope, which provides a transitional home for homeless mothers and their children. Many of the mothers are overcoming addiction. Merriman and community members restored and painted the center.

McElroy said Merriman spends time at the Door of Hope as well as the Neil Good Day Center at 17th and K streets.

"He enjoys hanging out with these folks," McElroy said. "I've seen him signing their sleeping bags, tattered shirts and ball caps. We have homeless senior citizens that are absolutely giddy that he will sit there and talk with them. He has not forgotten where he came from, and I don't think he ever will. I've met Hollywood actors, politicians and presidents, but I've never met someone with a more genuine heart than Shawne."

At the start of the clinic, Merriman gathered the youths around him for a pep talk.

"Listen to the people who are out here that are trying to teach you the right things," Merriman said. "That's why I'm out here. Have some fun. But the No. 1 thing, is stay in school and do what you're supposed to do. Listen to the people that are trying to tell you the right things to do."

Then Merriman and the youths put their hands together and shouted with pre-game enthusiasm, "Lights out!"

Maybe it should have been, "Lights on!"

My hats off to Shawne Merriman, and the rest of the Chargers for that matter. Not only can San Diego boast one of the most talented teams in the NFL, but also one of the classiest. Between LT, Rivers, and Merriman we've got three superstars who carry themselves with class and make an effort to benefit the community. Every NFL franchise should look at the Chargers and follow suit. These gentlemen are not only role models for children and young adults but should also be considered role models for every player in the NFL, especially those with high visibility. If carma exists the Bolts will have super bowl rings by the end of the year. Hats off Shawne Merriman keep it up.

Yeah he's a prince of a guy for a roid rager. As far as class goes, you have roid suspensions and the firing of a coaching staff that took your team to a 14-2 record. That's really classy.

The raiders have players that admitted to taking steroids too (al la Romanowski, Lyle Alzado etc) For a stinking faider fan to talk about the chargers being classless is ridiculous! Just keep suing the NFL for every little thing the faiders don't have... Go Bolts!

I have a lot of admiration for Merriman for trying to help out those less fortunate. Despite his error of the past football season, he is a role model for his efforts to help the homeless. Can we please not tear people down for their past errors (especially where no one outside of Merriman was injured), and accept that people will make mistakes but that should not necessarily be their defining attribute?

This is more like a press release written by Merriman's agent than anything else. Lets give credit for good deeds, but any article about his good deeds is simply incomplete without mentioning the fact that Merriman has got a serious credibility issue due to the juice he got caught taking (for which I don't recall him actually accepting responsibility). Shanahan continues to establish himself as a blind supporter of the home town teams rather than someone readers can turn to for real analysis and/or insight.....

Merriman does not have to do anything but, get in great shape for the season and focus on apponents, but as you can see he has chosen the high ground. San Dieagans expect for top athletes sometime to get out of line or make mistakes. This guy is the real deal and don't any of you judgemental wennies forget it... as for the raider fan.. yeah well you loonies have something to say all the time..shhhhhhhhh Bolts 52- Raiders-0 first game of the season.. holla back...619ner out!

Hey Raider Ray......Merriman is a true person...he is a hard working football player and if you read his articles in high school and college; he has always done above and beyond what he is expected...if he did a crime....(for illegal substance)....he served the NFL time....I know lots of Raider fans in Northern California and Southern and most of them are trying to be mean and discourteous (even kids, and women)....hey...the mean, bad, Raider players of the 60's and 70's are gone or dead...so why do the Raider fans still try to think they have mean tough players...Lou A. was the last mean player (and that was to even civilians and the media til cancer straightened him out...saw him on T.V. crying...because he knew God was taking him to the promiseland....his toughness just disappeared) Just have fun and cheer and root and dress up cool 4 your team; the rest BS.

Merriman has shown to deal with problems and improve his own lifestyle and help the community and be tough on the field....he paid for his NFL illegal substance crime with the suspension time that the NFL approved.... my question is.....why do so many Raider Fans turn to hatred and violence because there team is great one year and not good at all the next year...I say.....have fun; enjoy the game and it's Football....a game to enjoy and root and holler and let out your opinions about players and such...

And he passed how many tests before failing the one? LEARN ABOUT IT! I hate these "holier than thou" jackasses! Shawne, keep up the good works and kill these QBs in the following order come September: Grossman - Brady - Farve - Huard - Cutler - Russell - Schaub - Whoever's running MN - Manning - Garrard - McNair - Huard - Young (Madden Jinx) - Kitna - Cutler - Russell!

I think Shawne Merriman's story is very touching. you see a guy thats been blamed for steroid use and still bounces back, faces the media and tries to do positive things for the community. I think the chargers are the best team on the NFL not only on the field but also off the field. Everybody's an all star but u never see scandals and public outbursts like Randy Moss, Tank John, T.O. and etc... bottom line is I hope the person up above should repay the chargers with at least a SUPER BOWL.

Hey Raider Ray, are you a big scarry thug? Ooohh, everyone is soo frightened by you. The truth is, the Raider fans are the biggest _______ I have ever seen in my life. YOU are afraid of them so you decided to become one of them in your pathetic attempt to latch onto an identity. Good luck winning 2 games. lol!!!
