LT Deal Spared San Diego from Vick

Published: Wednesday, August 22, 2007 2:44 PM PDT

Chargers general manager A.J. Smith recalls the plan to send Vick’s draft rights to Atlanta in exchange for a pick that turned out to be LaDainian Tomlinson.

As the ugly Michael Vick dog-fighting tale unfolds, let’s take a moment to thank those that spared us watching Vick’s latest chapter, the plea bargain, stain the Chargers.

Thank you John Butler, the Chargers’ late general manager.

In 2001, the Chargers held the first pick of the draft, and Butler wanted franchise running back to rebuild around. He sent A.J. Smith, his successor as general manager, to the Senior Bowl to specifically evaluate LaDainian Tomlinson.

Butler pulled the trigger when he and Smith -- formerly with the Buffalo Bills during a run of four straight Super Bowl appearances -- judged Tomlinson another Thurman Thomas, the Bills’ running back on those Super Bowl teams. The Chargers sent the rights to the No. 1 pick to Atlanta, which used the choice on Vick, a Virginia Tech quarterback.

In exchange, the Chargers received the Falcons' fifth pick of the first round and then sat back and hoped Tomlinson would be available. He was.

Thank you Arizona Cardinals, who used the second pick on offensive tackle Leonard Davis. He’s now with the Dallas Cowboys.

Thank you Cleveland Browns, who used the third pick on defensive tackle Gerald Warren. The Browns later traded him to the Denver Broncos, who traded Warren on Monday to the Oakland Raiders.

Thank you Cincinnati Bengals, who used the fourth pick on defensive end Justin Smith.

In addition to the rights to draft Tomlinson, the Chargers received from the Falcons a third round pick, which turned out to be cornerback Tay Cody; a second-round pick in 2002, which turned out to be offensive lineman Toniu Fonoti; and wide receiver Tim Dwight.

None of those three players are still with the Chargers, but a straight-up deal of Tomlinson for Vick worked to the Chargers’ advantage even before Vick’s dog fighting arrest and plea bargain.

As silly as it might sound, Butler and Smith underestimated Tomlinson when they considered him a Thurman Thomas-like back. Thomas is in the Hall-of-Fame, but he wasn’t the sure Hall-of-Famer six years into his career that Tomlinson is considered to be now after his NFL MVP season and NFL record 31 touchdowns in 2006.

Smith says Butler had a Plan B if Tomlinson wasn’t available, but he won’t reveal it.

“We were coming off a 1-15 season, and we had to rebuild brick by brick,” Smith said. “Our thinking was that first brick should be a running back. We wanted a superstar and then we would find complementary players to put around him.”

Thank you, LT, for appearing to be as good as Thurman Thomas in those Senior Bowl evaluations.

Thank God this trade happened. Vick would have been the complete undoing of the Chargers in San Diego. The haters would've bit into this story with twice the ferocity of a pit bull. God Bless John Butler and his surviving family...

Plan B had to be Deuce McAllister of the N.O. Saints who was selected with the 23rd pick that year, and was the second RB picked that draft. I recall the Chargers scouting him as well, he's good but is no LT, and is now sharing carries with Reggie Bush.

The Chargers should have selected Vick, obviously the dog fighting issue has soured things, but how many playoff games has LT won? On the field at least Vick won in the playoffs... of course San Diego is happy with their boy, and has no reason not to be... However, Vick would have saved the Chargers from the Eli Manning debacle and immediately catapulted the team into must see national TV...

Dear DC, What is this "Eli Manning debacle" you are speaking about? The "Eli Manning Debacle" was the best thing that ever happened to this franchise. I hope you are being saecastic because if not, you might be a bigger moron than Vick himself. Thank You John Butler and AJ Smith for trading away for possibly the greatest running back in NFL history when it is all said and done

Great article Tom. I was wondering who got drafted in the few spots before LT. AJ Smith is a draft genious, which is why i'm so excited to see how this years rookies develop, Weddle is already looking like a playmaker. I'm so glad football is back!!!!!

DC, if you are a real Chargers fan, you cannot say the Eli Manning matter is a debacle. (However, you can say this if you're a fan of the New York Giants.) While the Eli Manning draft selection was a mess and was embarrasing, it was not a debacle. How can you say that when San Diego ends up with Shawn Merriman, Nate Kaeding and, of course, Philip Rivers (three Pro Bowlers). Give me that deal any day of any year! I am sooooooo thankful the Chargers traded away their 2000 number one draft pick (Michael Vick) to the Falcons! That move saved the Chargers from a REAL debacle: being the team that drafted a loser in 1998 (Cryin' Ryan Leaf--a SUPER debacle all unto itself) and an animal abuse and gamble (Vick) in 2000. Go, Chargers, go!

LT took us from being a francise in absolute utter despair (1-15) prior to his arrival to the elite of the league. Just because the inferior Redskins haven't made any noise doesn't mean you have to lash out. Know what you are talking about before you open you mouth.

Eli Manning debacle? What are you smokin'? That "debacle" yielded Phillip Rivers and Shawne Merriman. Arguably a better result than the Vick for LT deal...even before all the dogfight stuff came out!

Hmmm....Lets see. vick and Eli manning or L.T., Merriman, rivers, and Kaeding? Thats a tough one!! Are you retarded DC? And correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't the Chargers must see national TV? And aren't the falcons now one of the most horrible teams to watch? You must be a Bronco's or Raider fan!!!!

DC, you can't be serious!? Eli Manning created the whole "debacle" all by himself. The guy didn't want to play on a team that had LT on it? Must see t.v. Brother, have you even been watching the teli lately? The bolts are all over the place...yeah ok, so is Vick...i guess that's what you meant by "must see tv". Hindsight may be 20 20 but can you honestly say that you would rather have Vick on your team knowing what you know about the guy now?

Would Vick have found an opportunity to watch dog fighting here in San Diego? In the south, I understand, it's a substantial cultural phenomenon, albeit underground. Let's find out if it exists here and get rid of it!

Yes. The Chargers came out ahead on the actual trade of football players, the “debacle” I’m referring to is the week before the draft when he said he didn’t want to play for San Diego, and every national columnist and talking head was ripping the Spanos Family from here to Fiji… I’m saying if you would have drafted Vick, that never would have happened, because Vick isn’t going to go 4-12 or whatever the Charges went to get the #1 pick for the second time in three years…what I’m saying is drafting Vick would have immediately taken SD to respectability…of course we are there now with Merriman and Co., but Vick has still one in the playoffs…hopefully the Bolts change that this year…

DC, while Vick has won in the playoffs, he has also driven their (atlanta) whole organization crazy with his inconsistent play. So what if most national columnists were callin' for the Spanos's heads regarding the eli "debacle", what are those same columnists saying now about that "debacle"? Some of these same columnists if i remember correctly, were calling Vick the next "evolution" of QB'ing. YEAH RIGHT. You can't be an evolution of anything if the head on your shoulders is devolving into an "immature" mess at the age of 28. LT on the other hand has brought nothing but pride and joy to us. The playoff victories will come. For the moment we'll just enjoy the man, the myth, the legend.
