Halfaker Featured in HBO Documentary

The New York Times wrote a story about the HBO documentary "Alive Day Memories" that shows the recovery of American veterans who survived devastating injuries in Iraq.
One of the wounded warriors featured in the documentary, as well as the Times story, is Dawn Halfaker, a San Diego woman who lost her arm in Iraq.
Halfaker is interviewed by James Gandolfini, star of "The Sopranos." He was inspired to produce the documentary following a visit to Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington, D.C.
Halfaker, one of the first American military women to lose a limb in Iraq, is the Rancho Bernardo High alumnus that I wrote about on July 17. She was a three-sport athlete in high school who played basketball for Army at West Point.
When I identify Dawn as a "wounded warrior," it's a respectful reference to her work for Wounded Warriors Project, a nonprofit organization that assists military personnel who have been wounded serving their country. She has served as a board member and in June was elected vice-president.
"Alive Day Memories" shows on HBO throughout the month.
