Chambers Trade Sounds Familiar

Published: Tuesday, October 16, 2007 5:06 PM PDT

The Chargers made a trade Tuesday to acquire Miami Dolphins wide receiver Chris Chambers, a 2005 Pro Bowl pick, in exchange for a 2008 second-round draft pick.

Hmm, will history repeat itself? This sounds similar to another trade Chargers general manager A.J. Smith made that jump started the Chargers in 2004.

At the time, the Chargers were 3-3 and searching for a way to ease double coverage against tight end Antonio Gates and eight men in the box against running back LaDainian Tomlinson.

Keenan McCardell, one of the NFL's all-time leading receivers, arrived in a trade with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. He helped the Bolts beat Carolina in his first game to start an eight-game winning streak. The Chargers went on to a 12-4 record and AFC West title.

This year, the Chargers have missed wide receiver Eric Parker more than they expected. He was a precision route runner that quarterback Philip Rivers knew where to find home downfield.

But with Parker sidelined by a toe injury since training camp, Chambers comes to the Chargers at a time when they are 3-3 and searching for another option in the passing game. Parker's injury was slow to heal, and he was placed on injured reserve, a move that ends his season.

Chambers, 29, might be a younger version of McCardell. In Chambers' Pro Bowl season, he caught 82 passes for 1,118 yards and 11 touchdowns. In six games with the 0-6 Dolphins this season, he's caught 31 passes for 415 yards.

Chargers head coach Norv Turner is familiar with Chambers, having served as the Dolphins' offensive coordinator in 2002 in 2003.

"Chris is an explosive, talented player and I'm thrilled to have an opportunity to work with him again," Turner said. "He's a very consistent player and he has big-play ability. We think he can add to what we're doing on offense."

Chambers, a 5-foot-11, 220-pounder in his seventh NFL season, said he didn't expect a trade, but understands the reasons after a winless start. The trade to a playoff contender is essentially a new season for him.

"It probably wouldn't have happened if we were 2-3," said Chambers, who was making plans Tuesday to fly to San Diego. "But I'm going to take advantage of this opportunity to do the best I can help this team."

Welcome to SD Chris Chambers!!! Super stoked about this trade. Chambers is a proven playmaker with great ball skills. This new weapon will add to the momentum the Chargers have built going into the bye week. Forget about the first four weeks, the Chargers are gonna roll all the way to the playoffs!

Right now the Bolts are as good as they were last year; with this trade they are now better. Prior to this trade there were three areas that the Bolts needed a major upgrade on to be a real contender: Wide receiver play; quarterback play and a shut down corner on defense to play opposite Jammer. With the Chambers move they got two out of the three. However, Drayton Florence is in a contract year and is on the bubble--gives up big plays and Cromartie is far too inconsistent. OJT is fine for average ball clubs, but Champions? I don't think so. FYI to CB's: Get it going, or your next to be riding the pine!

Jammer is not anywhere near a shutdown corner... and has never been... we need someone to stop the passing of good teams.. we know we can stop the joke teams (see Faiders) but we have to beat the good teams (see colts)... Chambers helps us on Offence but that D is lacking and has been... Marty knew how to hide it...NORV???? Not Marty.

i am so sick of you so-called fans bashing Norv, and Hailing Marty. If you recall... Marty had the exact same record in 2004 (as the article states) as Norv does today 3-3! They STILL wanted that recieving threat so they went out and picked up Keenan Mccardell. Now we are 3-3 and we needed recieving help and AJ pulls off (a GREAT move by the way)an even better deal than the one that brought Keenan and gets Chris Chambers!!!! Marty couldnt HIDE our bad pass defense, and neither can Norv. You cant HIDE anything in the NFL. So quit whining about Marty. He had his 8-8 seasons too ok? Give Norv a chance. If we were 0-6 i wouldnt be supporting him this much but jeez you guys, we are 3-3 and tied for first in our division!!!

I agree with BoltDan...Jammer is SO overrated. Between giving up 10 yards at the line of scrimmage and penalties, he lives only on his first round draft choice rep. He can be thrown against everytime. That said, great trade by AJ to get Chambers. Go Bolts!!!

They won't win eight in a row - the schedule is too tough - but they now have an experienced, versatile WR. They should still win 10 ball games and make the postseason. If so, they could be the equivalent of the 2005 Pittsburgh Steelers.

Hey BoltDan, did u happen to watch Jammer on Harrison when we beat the so called good team & ended their run to a perfect season? Corners are only as good as their pass rush! (See Champ "All-world" Bailey against us in the game we played 2 weeks ago) Hmmm... boy does he suck!

I think you Jammer haters are overrated. He rarely gets burned and his penalties have decreased to almost nothing compared to a couple years ago (9-7 heartbreak year) Lets re-visit shall we. Bears..Only 3 points...Patriots..k our ass like they are creaming everyone else and their corners...Packers..b us with the slant which if I am not mistaken is the job of the middle linebacker, then the safety. Chiefs...Gonzales... again a tight end, who is suppossed to covered by a linebacker and once again the slant pass...Broncos..3 points....Raiders..o offensive touchdown to a tight-end again..imagine that...The reason there were so many sacks is because Jammer was doing his job..The only corner who was burned was Florence (which is much more typical than Jammer) and who saved the touchdown at the 1 yard line with a safety like hit..IT WAS JAMMER..Get your facts straight..stop living in the past..

I was just wondering why we don't kick off when we win the coin toss? It is the only choice that gives you an advantage. kicking off first gives you the opportunity to score at the end of the half and then get the ball right back in the third quarter.

Is it me or does Chris Chambers look like Chris Tucker (from Rush Hour)? Great move by the way - hoping VJax matures to be more of threat, it'll be like the good 'ol days when we had Joiner, Chandler and Winslow scaring the crap out of defensive backfields.

First, I have been watching Jammer play so inconsistant since he has been here... second, it is a good move by AJ to get Chambers, but... he also got rid of a coach who has won 200 games... got rid of the leading tackling LB (Edwards) who by the way covers that slant. Thirdly.. and finaly OUR Corners have been lacking for a long time... Jammer should be a safety because he does those things right but as a shut down corner???? Please you guys... ask your selves how many times that guy is going to give up 15 yard cushion to a reciever that only needs 5 yards for a first down... or PI penelties... he led the league for many of the past seasons in PI's (look it up) thus the comment that at least Marty knew how to scheme poor coverage out of their game...

BoltDan, Marty is gone, let it go. I Don't like Norv either But he was the best we could find at the time. Donnie is gone as well. Let it go. Wilhelm is doing a stand up job directing the Defence and giving up only 13 points in the 3 games he's been in there. If Norv Chokes, he's gone If he wins and gets us to the SB i will have alot of crow to eat too.
