Fickle Fans Can Be Amusing

Chargers fans clamor for an autograph from linebacker Shawne Merriman, who sat out Sunday's game with an injury. Photo: Sam Hodgson

Tuesday, December 18, 2007 | Funny how quickly the perception of the Chargers’ season and head coach Norv Turner has changed.

In just a few short weeks, the Chargers went from a team perceived to have squandered its season to one that clinched an AFC West title for the third time in four years with Sunday’s 51-14 win over the Detroit Lions.

Tom Shanahan

Now there’s a team San Diego fans would love to hate -- the Lions, losers of six straight after a 6-2 start.

Remember when fans chanted, "Marty! Marty!" late in the home loss to the Kansas City Chiefs?

They were referring to the same Marty Schottenheimer they wanted to run out of town after playoff losses following a 12-4 season in 2004 and 14-2 in 2006.

Remember when fans booed after the first two plays against the Baltimore Ravens -- a game the Chargers won 32-14 -- when the Ravens stuffed off-tackle runs and quarterback Philip Rivers responded by yelling back at the fans?

How many seasons ago was that? Was Harland Svare still coaching? Kevin Gilbride?

Were fans still pouring beer on players, prompting the club to erect the canopy that now hangs over the entrance to the tunnel to the locker room?

It’s really nothing new for fans to panic. It’s the price we pay for sports starting out as fun and evolving into a high-priced business that is taken too personally.

But I wondered what amused the Chargers players the most about the fans' response to the dark days of the 2007 season.

Chargers head coach Norv Turner leaves the field after an early season loss to Kansas City as fans heckle him, chanting "Marty, Marty!" Photo: Sam Hodgson

"Probably the funniest thing was the boos after we ran those two plays that got stuffed," center Nick Hardwick said. "People booed Norv. People booed Philip. Now look -- they're both heroes. Philip played great, even though he was injured."

Most of the players just shrugged it off the irony of fans overreacting.

"It’s just the nature of the business," tight end Antonio Gates said. "We struggled early in the season, but (Turner) continued to coach and prepare us to play well. I’m happy for him and the team. We stuck it out. We were able to accomplish one of our goals -- winning the AFC West. It’s a testament to the character of the guys in this locker room."

Cornerback Quentin Jammer said the tough times the Chargers went through before clinching a playoff berth isn’t that unusual. He pointed to the Super Bowl champion Pittsburgh Steelers as recently as 2005.

The Steelers won four playoff games en route to the Super Bowl title, but in the regular season their record went from 3-2 to 7-2 to 7-5 to sneaking into the playoffs as a wild-card team with an 11-5 record.

"The funniest thing is people were writing us off," Jammer said. "People were saying we’re terrible and they weren’t going to the games anymore. It’s a long season. Anything can happen in 16 games."

Added outside linebacker Shawne Merriman, "When we were 1-3, people were saying our season was over and the season was only a quarter the way through. We played the season in quarters. We went 3-1 the next quarter. Now we’re trying to finish up the last quarter without a loss before the playoffs. We’re in a position we expected to be in."

Defensive end Jacques Cesaire said fans take for granted how hard it is to win in the NFL.

"We love the fans, but sometimes they can be a pain in the butt," Cesaire said. "Fans were spoiled by 14-2 last year, but we were spoiled, too. Fans forget that this is the NFL, and other teams have smart offensive coordinators and defensive coordinators. I’m proud of the way guys kept working hard on this team. Philip has stood in there all year and been poised. He’s done a great job of leading this team."

With all the despair that hung over San Diego, there are now NFL hallmarks to point to.

Did you know LaDainian Tomlinson might win the NFL rushing title?

His 1,311 yards trails Pittsburgh’s Willie Parker by only six yards despite sitting out the second half of Sunday’s victory. Minnesota’s Adrian Peterson trails Tomlinson by 111 yards before the Vikings’ game Monday night.

Did you know Shawne Merriman, despite missing Sunday’s game, is only two sacks off the NFL lead? He has 11.5, a strong number even if he doesn’t play again in the regular season while resting his knee injury.

Did you know Antonio Cromartie leads the NFL in interceptions with 10?

Did you know that at 9-5 the Chargers are two wins shy of an 11-win season?

It’s a mark the franchise -- other than the recent 2004 and 2006 seasons -- has met or surpassed only four other seasons: 1979, 12-4; 1980, 11-5; 1992, 11-5; and 1994, 11-5.

The last time the Chargers went to the playoffs in back-to-back seasons they finished 11-5 in 1994 and 9-7 in 1995.

"Everyone is excited," Hardwick said. "We talked early in the year about building this thing to a crescendo. We want to escalate things to a frenzy, and look what’s happening. Look at the six turnovers we got (against the Lions) and the field position the defense gave. Look at the play of special teams and the big hits. We’re making big plays on offense and defense. We’re coming together."

So the Chargers beat Detroit. Whoopeeee. I predict they'll be out after the first playoff game. They are still a lousy team, starting with the coach and quarterback. Lots of other talent, but losers.

I long ago have stopped feeling guilty for not being loyal to one pro sports team or another. It is simply an expensive entertainment to watch or go see and if a team does not play well, I don't watch or go to games. That is no different from other entertainment venues like television, movie or theatre. No one deserved loyalty, it is earned. With few exceptions, no pro sports team or individual player deserves loyalty. They get paid to perform and when they don't, I move on. That being said...Go Packers and Go Chargers!

Unquestioning loyalty is exactly what owners want because it excuses them from having to put a quality product on the field. I refuse to comply. I follow the Chargers when they play well. I don't follow them when they suck. Sports are the only products in which consumers are expected to continue to consume inferior products. Any other business would fail if it expected this from its clients.

As a San Diego native, I am a diehard Charger fan. Although I couldn't help but take Poppa's comments into consideration. Let's watch the San Diego Super Chargers take the whole thing this year and see how pathetic San Diego looks to the rest of the nation when the Chargers take their product to another market because we can't close a deal for a new stadium. Then you can truly cheer for any NFL team you want to without having a home team. The probability is more realistic than ever thanks in large part to Mike Aguirre. I wonder who he pulls for? It sure as heck is not San Diego!

All the hoopla over the Chargers is just that: hoopla. Team Spanos will love you and then leave you. Read the writing on the wall...Oceanside didn't fly...Chula Vista won't fly...but the Chargers sure will. Love 'em while you have 'em. It's too bad Spanos is seemingly too greedy to consider remodeling Qualcomm when that is the perfect location already. link

This article left out some interesting things,,, first just because the media is gushing over Norv doesn't mean the rest of us are... he still stinks until he can prove himself and I think he is doing it by letting the players play and staying out of the way. Second the team may go away but we still love them... those that are fair weather are bandwagoneers (free world). I disagree with Norv/AJ/Cotrell/Jamm and have said that from the start. NOw that they have won the division (AFC Worst) Let's see if they can play up to better teams and win the whole thing. The only bad part of that is that we have to keep Norv and AJ. Go Chargers beat the Patsies.

Oh and would somebody tell Jammer that he hasn't done that much except lead the league in PI's... he needs to be moved to safety. Also let's take one game at a time (Marty Mantra) and then worry about the play-offs when we get there. Speaking of Marty it is funny how everybody brings out the 3rd time we have won the west in 4 years... let's not forget Marty was responsible for those other times and Norv is just riding the coatails of a great coach.

First of, to whom is Norv now a hero ? Not me. I am very happy we're back winning, but most of these wins have not been pretty. The sportwriters in the U/T, and now here in the VofSD are writing stories about the fans supposedly now being on the Norv and Phillip bandwagon...uh, no. Don't mistake happiness for a win as thinking either of these guys has what it takes. Any fan in the know would trade Rivers for Brees in a nanosecond. How many years will it take for AJ's stupidity to look like a good idea? And J. Cesaire needs to keep in mind that many players forget they're in the NFL. We have high expectations for them. They need to earn that pay. Games aint free.

I make the a 150 mile roundtrip to each Bolt Home game from my residence. I also am a diehard. I loved the team through 1-15 so I embrace them harder when they win. A true fan sticks with his team through thick and thin. Others will love the Patriots when they win and abandon them when they lose (to the chargers this year). Go Bolts!

What kind of article is this? Wait til after the fact and gloat? Is that like some fair weather team hopper waiting until NE is 14-0 and saying NE RULES, They are my team!!!!!!! LOL! Whatever. I still have issues with Norv and the team. Just because we played some dogs down the stretch doesn't mean Norv is a Genius all of a sudden. Nice story.

Being at the game and booing is not being a fair weather fan. If you are actually there, you earn that right. Seeing raw talent ala Cromartie and Merriman and drafting them is one thing. Not only trading, but insulting Brees as he's booting him out the door is another. And Edwards. And the whole Marty S. thing is like a schoolkid joke. As conservative and predictable as Marty was, Norv makes him look like an uber-genius risk taker. And Brian hits the nail on the head ref NE. Reminds me of a few years back, when suddenly half the nation claimed to be from Wisconsin and was wearing those stupid cheeseheads.

Do some of you guys breakfast on bile? Move Jammer to safety? That is so, like, four seasons ago. Maybe he would get more picks at safety because at safety they're throwing your way at least half the time. Not so now. Cromartie's clearly a great player, but as his career moves along his picks will go DOWN not up. Still ripping Norm? If you can't see the improvement in this team you're either not paying attention or you're just not capable of seeing what's in front of your face.

The Chargers are one of the top five teams in the league. They will probably win in round one, then lose at Indy in round two. If they get past Indy, they'll lose to the Pats in the title game. They're not yet an AFC Super Bowl team - they still need a bit of work. They'll be a legitimate contender next year regardless of who is coaching them.

Most of us still ripping NORV will be as long as he is here... OR at least until he proves himself... and as I have seen so far he hasn't not even by (FINALLY) beating a bad team as the Lions... I have to agree with D there also... I think he said it all... I was booing Norv and Chanting Marty... because AJ's ego killed many good things... now you guys can keep sticking up for him, Norv, and PI Toast and Jammer but those of us that liked the great players/coaches that were kicked out of the house like a red-headed step child will continue to remind you of the talent that we are missing. Cromartie (and stop me if you heard this before) has done more in his first starting season then Toast and Jam has done in his full career... GO BOLTS Crush the donkeys.

Second generation San Diegan, Balboa Stadium as a toddler. I no longer live in SD but have lived in Denver, Philly, Atlanta, and Oakland, never letting my "Fan Hood" waiver. Sure is nice to see more "Insta-Fans" no added water necessary. Please keep buying Charger gear so Spanos can open up his proverbial tight...wallet, and get us a new stadium or polish up the Murph. It would be a sad day to see the Super Chargers leave this great city. Turner the jury is still out, and probably so should you be. Rivers on the other hand, can anybody remember when Dan Fouts was booed as a bum in his early years. Let the kid become as great as he can be.

Pal52, here's my problem with what youre saying. Norv inhereted a 14-2 team. He lost Edwards, but had a veteran in the wings ready to take over..and wilhelm has done just fine..everyone else is still here, and young and healthy. Norv took that team, and coached them into playing like a bunch of strangers who had never played together before. Midway through the season, they're playing decent, but not overpowering ball again. HOW DOES HE GET CREDIT FOR IMPROVING THE TEAM??!! If he improved the team at all, we'd all be talking about the undefeated Chargers, not the Patriots. The talent we have in incredible. Norv is coaching them to just above average.

D you and I are on the same page as I suspect most Chargers fans are...That is why we booed Norv and chanted Marty... everybody knows we have come BACK together but what pulled us apart??? read between the lines PAL... open the eyes and see what mediocre NORV (and his crony boss AJ) have done... 4-4 first 8 games YIKES.. lets hope that we can go 7-1 the second half... If we do it will be because of the pure talent that this team has not because poor play calling Norv has done anything... Go BOLTS Crush the Donkeys!!!
