Some Notes

Published: Thursday, May 1, 2008 6:37 PM PDT

Couple of things:

  • This is an important and moving series. Take the time to read it if you can. Randy Dotinga is a talented writer and it's an honor to have him publish it here.

  • The wife has been on fire lately with these cartoons. Check them out -- some of her smartest work yet. She did just get a job though. We'll see if the volunteer drawing continues. I'll sharpen up on my guilt-trip skills.
  • I was remiss not to point out that the well-organized and good debate I moderated last night for the District 7 candidates was put on by the Tierrasanta Community Council. There were 150 people there. Nice.

  • I tried listening to the Union-Tribune's Bob Kittle, today on SignOnRadio where he hosted City Attorney Mike Aguirre. But I got pulled away. Any thoughts or reports? The topic was Aguirre's obstruction of an infrastructure bond. I haven't followed that as well as I should but it's worth noting that it's rather unfortunate that the city should have to borrow money to pay for routine maintenance of city streets. I remember my father telling me never to put groceries on my credit card. He said the debt would always stick around in some form and I would always be behind.

  • I never did. Though that's probably more luck than anything.

"Hmmm... Dotinga is not exactly a common surname. Is this the same Randy Dotinga who writes a weekly radio column -- Static -- for the North County Times? (I used to work in Radio, hence my interest in such a column.) If so, he is indeed a talented writer to be able to shift from a light, entertainment topic like Radio, to a serious subject like the Coronado Bridge and its historical role in suicide. Fine work, Randy, in both publications..."

"Mike is NOT obstructing the bond issue. The bonds are for routine maintenience, which standing alone is the bone head move of the year by Sanders (your Dad are correct on the grocery credit card ebt). Mike just stated that you cannot issue lease revenue bonds secured by real property other than what the bonds are being used for without a 2/3's vote of the people. Since the bonds are being secured by the PD HQ's, librabry and other City real property that have no bearing or relatonship to the bonds, it cannot be issued without a 2/3's approval from the residents. Issuing high risk bonds for routine operating expenses is the exact reason this City is in the financial mess it is in today. It is a move no financially competent person would make."

"with tongue in cheek: Oh how typical. The dis-staff ARTIST is farmed out to the bonds of wage slavery whilst the PONTIFICATOR is subsidized. Oh how the mighty have fallen to the depths of sex role stereotyping. Another quality image in ruin. How very typically American :>) Volunteerism is commendable,no doubt, but equal pay for equal work is what one thought the VOSD standard. Perhaps a fund raising concert is in order? Can we ear-mark our subscriptions to the artist specifically? !FREE THE PEN!"

"This infrastructure bond is as you've characterized it...putting groceries on the credit card. Worse, it's an interest only deal that gets refinanced in two years. It puts up city property as collateral. It should, under the law, go before the voters. Besides all that, a hundred million is less than a tenth of what is needed to repair our long neglected infrastructure. Aguirre and Frye are correct to try to block it, and it's an important topic for reporting. See Bauder's explanation of this bond: link"

"Got a job! Aaack! I thought she was an artist -- that is a job, even if you're not getting paid! // But maybe the artist would rather work for a living -- is Ms. Pingree Lewis gonna have a line of work similar to her recent past, gazing at lots and lots of water while contemplating world politics and the long reach of her bow? I would make a donation to the voiceofsandiego.org if I thought it was part of a larger fundraising effort to retain Ms. Pingree at least part time for her excellent editorial illustrations. Hey Jack, I'll match your donation to the artist."
