More Lame Campaigns

Published: Saturday, August 30, 2008 12:01 PM PDT

A Republican strategist sent me a note of response to this last post looking at the city of San Diego political scene through the goggles the presidential candidates' great war is providing us.

This Republican had a message of humility about the party's local prowess:

The 'lame' column was pretty good._

Remember, though, our side ran a shitload of lame campaigns in the city for a_long time. For years, in the 90s, we should have held the old 78th and the_overlapping senate seat. We also managed to lose control of the council by_losing safe GOP seats. We lost control of Oceanside, a GOP bastion, for_several years._And we ran a totally lame campaign for governor with Lungren.

All true. I never wanted to communicate that local Republicans were all unfailing geniuses. But this reinforces the point: They did have some trouble in the 90s and they learned from it all.

Local Democrats aren't even putting themselves in a position to learn in many cases.

Hey Scott. Appreciate the local politics. We need to see more stories on the local campaigns. And isn't there anything else going on the front page of VoSD except the CCDC/SEDC thing? I'm getting oh so bored.....yawn....

Hang in there, Coast Watcher. The day after Labor Day is the traditional starting date for campaigns to really kick in and start picking up steam. The kids are back in school, summer vacations are over, and it's "back to life, back to reality."

Totally agree. C'mon VoSD! There are 3 council races and the Battle to Save San Diego (Evacuate Aguirre) to cover, remember? Though you can't be blamed for a little over-coverage of the SEDC and CCDC stories, seeing as how you single-handedly broke them. Hey...what the heck is going on here anyway? Journalism??? But don't rest on your laurels too much, or soon you'll look like the U-T, gloating endlessly over your Duke Cunningham triumph as your staff moves on and your readership dwindles to a trickle.

"Battle to Save San Diego" could not agree more, but whom is more likely to Save (serve) the majority of people living in San Diego, and whom is more likely to attempt to minimize all past and current ‘wrong doings’ and return our city to a condition of faux-openness and transparency? We should look to the past performance of the politicians we have had in San Diego, look at the organizations and groups supporting them and endorsing them; then match those past Pension politicians, Enron by the Sea politicians, Ball Park Guarantee politicians […] with the political party and/or candidates who were linked or in some way associated with those events. It is easy to believe that Developers/Redevelop are not putting their money into Mike A.. So who are the Developers/Redevelop or those who are making a fat living off development/redevlop supporting?

And how about the rest of the County campaigns, like Mike Lumpkin in the 52nd? Democratic Candidate Lumpkin is running against Duncan D Hunter, son the Congressman Hunter who is soon to retire. Might be a big story here for an area that's been Republican dominated for about 28 years. Could be a major shakeup. Lumpkin looks like a "sleeper" candidate posed to jump out of the gates. He’s a highly qualified retired Navy Seal with National Security background.

Did you write, "Lumpkin looks like a "sleeper" candidate” or did you really mean to write a "sleeping" candidate? So say Hunter was in US Army, as a 'Lieutenent' (1969-1971, Vietnam War era.) but then again I have not seen his military record nor why he was only in for two years. Mike Lumpkin may be a highly qualified, but I have no idea what really makes a person qualified to hold any political office in San Diego. Not making money, being endorsed by, or tied to a pro-redevelopment agenda seems to be hard hurdle to over come. His being a retired Navy Seal puts him head and shoulders above any local political candidate of either party as far as I am concerned. I am sure he will not be browbeaten or bulled into silence like so many of the other local Dems.

"His being a retired Navy Seal puts him head and shoulders above any local political candidate of either party as far as I am concerned. I am sure he will not be browbeaten or bulled into silence like so many of the other local Dems". So true, Gregory. Mike, our Democratic candidate, is way qualified to be a leader, above all others. Not only that...he's a great guy personally. I said he is a "sleeper" because no one in the media is "awake" to the fact that this guy is so qualified and ready to work as our Congressman in the 52nd. that it is a travesty that the media has not taken notice. Perhaps the media has assumed that the Duncan surname is in-"sur"-mountable. Let's see who picks up on this first.

My reference to "sleeper" has to do with the fact that the media appears to be asleep and hasnt picked him up much yet. Perhaps it's because they don't think he has a chance against the Hunter surname; that he would have an in-surmountable job to be elected. There could very well be an upset here.

The media’s main goal is to make profits, it seems - of the people calling themselves Republicans the main goal (devoid of any level of social responsibility) is to make ever-increasing levels of profits. The Media’s main goal is to make profits, it seems our local Republican developers, redevelopers, and companies controlled or lead by Republicans look to haven been and are still making the profits; it would be only natural, if that's the case, that media would cater to the wealthy elite of our local communities. Just do is a simple word and phase count while recording the number and type of presuppositions and negative/positive linking techniques used when our local news ‘talking heads’ are doing Demo Party Candidates and Repub Party Candidates. It's obvious - makes me sick to turn on any of the Valpone, or any local, 'news station.'

Questions: (last election) Did a mainstream politic party challenge the votes of our military personnel (some, only the ones registered as democrats, or only few) serving in Iraq? Did anyone challenge the votes of our wondered/disabled military personnel?
