The Pam Anderson 'Web Page'

Published: Tuesday, August 19, 2008 6:38 PM PDT

Given my previous expressed support for the straight-talking Chula Vista city manager, David Garcia, a couple of readers this morning inquired about my thoughts on this story in the Union-Tribune today about Garcia's use of the internet at work.

The story has all sorts of innuendo about the supposedly "inappropriate" things Garcia was doing on the computer. Considered among the stream of news briefs about this or that teacher or public official downloading pornography at work, it's not a light charge.

But the story and Garcia's accusers never shared exactly what it was that he was inappropriately viewing. There's an allusion by City Councilman Steve Castenada that Garcia spent "an inordinate amount of time viewing the Pamela Anderson Web page."

This is rather comical, first for the awkward way it's presented. It's the way you might imagine John McCain saying it: I tell you he was lookin' at the Pamela Anderson Web page. As if there is one said page among various "Web pages" floating around that Internet thing.

I went trolling for "the Pamela Anderson Web page" -- shhh, don't tell the board -- and couldn't find anything named that. I settled on her "official site" the pamelachannel.com.

And I was immediately intrigued:

To say that Pamela Anderson is enjoying a full life would clearly be an understatement; the most recognizable icon of the new millennium has hit her stride again in so many different fields.

Wow. Who knew? I hadn't realized she was the "most recognizable icon of the new millennium."

The other allusion to wrongdoing in the Chula Vista City Manager's Office was the admission that Garcia was looking at vacation photos in his office. The horror.

In the news climate that exists right now, if you're going to accuse someone in the newspaper of downloading inappropriate content, you better come with something a bit sexier than vacation photos and an "inordinate amount of time" spent on a page described as merely the Pam Anderson page. I mean, what was he doing with the Pamela Anderson Web page? Is he reading about the "most recognizable icon of the new millennium" or projecting her images onto the wall in his office next to his vacation photos?

It's difficult to care about it right now, but if the U-T and his critics want us to, they need to bring the details.

This story is amusing on many levels, that a staff member ratted out there boss for this is one... A complaint, a retaliation? All for Pam Anderson and Vacation photos funny. Now the Pam Anderson and Tommy Lee video... that definitely not would not be funny. David Garcia in a speedo on the beach in florida... not funny. (no offense DG) Life is qualified is the point. That and reporting can be shallow sometimes too. If they were print vacation photos would it have had as sordid a sound? All that said, it begs the question as to why are government workers held to a higher standard than we hold ourselves? Who doesn't show people vacation photos at work? Who doesn't plan there night sometimes using the boss's internet? Maybe read about lost, or survivor at lunch?

The followup article today was equally as bad. That being said I suspect that this has a little more to do with a movement to remove the City Manager rather than his use of a computer in the office. I also find it hilarious that Casteneda offers this quote about a personnel matter that should only be discussed in closed session: “He should be an exemplary symbol for everyone who works for the city of Chula Vista,” four months after saying this to the UT "This is a warning that any public official can be brought in, they can be indicted, they can be dragged through the gutter, and there's nothing they can do about it,” All this after a judge declared mistrial on four counts of perjury and 1090 violations. distinction: Mistrial not acquittal. This goes in the do as I say not as I do category.

City Managers often have to work evenings when there is a job that must be finished or a meeting (such as a city council meeting) or conference. They don't work 9 to 5. As long as they get the job done, they are free to schedule their work hours as they see fit. I'm not sure that it's anybody's business what they do with their personal laptops. This situation sounds like a case of someone wanting to get rid of the City Manager without giving a legitimate reason.

I think this is a case of "wag the dog"! One day the story is Castaneda and his $200,000 legal fees he was reimbursed for. Then the next day Casyaneda is concerned about the amount of time the City Manager stends on websites. Great distraction story. If Castaneda can spin the UT around like this on a worthless story, then the public will never know all the really bad things he does. And for a guy who likes to do his dirty work in closed session so no one knows about it, he sure likes to talk about others closed session items in public. What a piece of work! The UT reporter must be Castaneda fan #1!!!

I supported Steve Castaneda during the vindictive and foolish attacks on him by the D.A.'s "Public Integrity Unit," and so I am distressed to see Mr. Castaneda behaving so much like prosecutor Patrick O'Toole. Come on, Steve. Surely you can find a more important project than controlling what the city manager looks at on his computer. You and Patrick O'Toole both need to start looking at the big picture.
