Mayor's Spokesman: Republican Party = Cult

A post from Twitter caught my eye this morning.

Alex Roth, a new spokesman for city of San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders wrote: "I'm beginning to see more and more similarities between the Heaven's Gate cult and today's Republican Party."

Heaven's Gate is the cult that committed mass suicide in 1997 in San Diego. Sanders is a Republican.

I called Roth to ask him about the post.

"What I was referring to were the extreme elements of the national Republican Party and some of their behavior in the New York Congressional race," Roth said.

"This has absolutely nothing to do with the sensible, moderate policies of the correct elements of the Republican Party, which includes Mayor Sanders."

Here's a screenshot of Roth's tweet:

Update: Roth just e-mailed another statement: “I apologize for my Twitter post earlier today. It should go without saying that my comments represented my own personal observations, not the mayor’s.  I would add that I was referring specifically to talk-radio comments related to a New York congressional election.  Nonetheless, I apologize to those who were offended by the comment.”

Discusting accusation and comparison. Are you a PR professional? Seems you have forgotten your professional ethics.

I think Mr. Roth's comments are spot on. The Republican party is in the process of being taken over by the lunatic fringe. Witness the 30 (all male) Republican Senators who voted against the Frankin anti-rape amendment.

So the mayor has yet another new "spokesperson". How many is that now, 6, 7, 8? And this new guy has time to comment on New York politics? Too bad Sanders doesn't hire someone to contact property owners whose land he suddenly thinks might make a a good spot to put the Chargers. Does anyone else get the sinking feeling that city government is a shambles? Here we are with a projected deficit not that far from 200 mil, and all we hear is talk about a new city hall, moving ahead with a central library with financing that's a joke, expanding a convention center that already has an operating subsidy of 4 mil per year, an improved cruise ship terminal and............give me a break!

Shambles is just the right word, Bill. You've summed it up nicely.

What's a twitter comment made by some guy on his own time have to do with finding a home for the Chargers or new city facilities? Oh that's right, nothing. You're a guy who just likes to gripe and see it on web sites.

Roth has now deleted both his insult and unconvincing apology from Twitter. A truly brilliant move to make us all forget.

I can't believe Sanders is going to let him get away with insulting Heaven's Gate like that.

The comparison is obviously a fallacy. The Heaven’s Gate folks rented a home in Rancho Santa Fe. Republicans living in the Ranch clearly don’t rent.

This Tweet and reader commentary are hysterically funny! This guy Alex is so screwed at work now. Perhaps the Mayor will be getting another "new" spokesman soon. He'll probably be careful to hire someone from his own party next time.

From a spokesman to a eunuch in one Twitter. Perhaps the Mayor should outsource his spokesperson army.

Being honest... that is something you do not truely see from the Republican Party! He should be patted on the back versus having to defend his party.

Sanders needs to fire this buffoon post haste. He needs to go as quickly as he came. Republicans elected Sanders and returned him to office. Get real, Mayor. Oh, but I forget to whom I am speaking: the Central Library, the Convention Center expansion, the City Hall fiasco and now playing footsies with the Chargers -- again. Sanders has really let this Prop 8 thing go to his head, as he runs headlong into an embrace with all his new liberal fans. I guess this was only to be expected. See if you get my vote again, Jerry. Oh, and Barry Jantz, since when is it a crime or moral failing to be successful?

So the guy Twittered an impulsive, but profound thought. Too bad thatis not part of the national Republican leadership these days, profound thoughts I mean. If the nat'l Republican leadership wasn't so reactionary and perhaps led by idiots like Hannity and Limbaugh, they might not inspire Twitters like that.

Find Bill Maher's hilarious take on Democrats and Republicans ( one is center right and the other is right out of their minds) on YouTube. I miss liberals. I haven't seen any in years.

Edgar, you obviously don't know that I am a GOPer. There is no crime in being successful. But, I do have the ability to laugh at a situation and this was one!

My sympathies to Alex Roth, a very gifted writer with a penchant for telling the truth. It just proves what a sinkhole personal media has become. How ironic that it's better not to have an opinion anymore to avoid retribution from those with long knives. Kind of the opposite of free speech, eh? By the way, great scoop here by the watchdog media. Glad we nipped this one in the bud.

OK how do we tell when he is speaking for the mayor because we know Sanders will not speak for himself and apparently has trouble getting others to speak his thoughts and they are usually so small you would think it would be an easy job. Maybe Roth should only twitter after work hours and start this is"my thought and not Sanders"
