San Diego Unified Shows Weakness with ‘Schoobrary’ Safety Standards

Eliminating Free Transportation Is a Can of Worms
The likely end of Choice Bus Transportation will force hard decisions on San Diego Unified parents and create difficult choices for the school community as well. Many of the children getting transported to schools out of their neighborhood are getting the expenses paid by the district from California State discretionary funds, and if the School Choice or Voluntary Educational Enrollment Program is cut parents will have to transport their kids at their own expense. This added burden on low income parents will force them to cancel any cross town opportunities for their children, particularly if they have larger families. Even more complicated is the effect the enrollment loss will have if large groups of kids stay in their neighborhood schools. Using a school like Mission Bay High, where nearly 60 percent of the kids come from across town, one can easily see the consequences.
