Thursday, June 1, 2006 | Today (Thursday) is starting out small, but SW swell will be building later this afternoon, and peak along the coast on Friday. We have waves on tap this weekend, and more SW swell is due early next week.

Right now, the California Buoy is checking in at 7 feet with very short 7-second periods. Closer to the coast, the Half Moon Bay buoy is at 3 feet with 7-second periods and Cape San Martin buoy is at 7 feet with 14-second periods.

WNW periods are running 6-9 seconds from 270-290 degrees, and a touch of SW is coming through with periods running 14 seconds from 190.

In SoCal, most all breaks are running knee to waist high. As the SW swell fills in throughout the day, look for some forerunners now and again and better size by this evening.

Northern California and the Central Coast are seeing knee to waist high surf most everywhere.

Water temperatures are averaging 66 degrees in San Diego, 66 in Orange County, 64 in LA, 61 in Ventura County, 61 in Santa Barbara, 53 along the central coast, and 53 in NCal.

Winds as of 6:00 this morning were light and variable most everywhere along the California coast. Afternoon onshores are expected to reach 8-12 mph. A strong high sitting across the 4-corner states will maintain its position now through the weekend, spreading like hot melting butter across California.
