The closest race of the night appears to be a city council contest in Chula Vista, where incumbent Patty Chavez is trailing eminent domain foe Rudy Ramirez. Also close behind is former planning commissioner Russ Hall. Less than 150 votes separate the top three candidates in this race, but only the top two will advance to a runoff.

You can check the registrar’s site to monitor the progress of that race, even after we’ve gone to bed (or gotten back into the office Wednesday morning).

Also of interest is the mayor’s race there, where incumbent Steve Padilla is edging out Councilman Steve Castaneda by a thin margin for the opportunity to meet up with Cheryl Cox in a runoff election this fall.

This race became very contentious after it basically became a referendum on Padilla, although the residents say they were hoping the candidates would talk more about their vision for the city’s growth. Read about Chula Vista’s elections here.
