Today (Tuesday) our latest southern hemi SW swell that kept the action going yesterday has reached its peak and will be diminishing over the next few days. We still have some wind swell in the mix as well that will subside by the time our next southern hemi swell rolls in this Sunday.
We’re tracking some late season WNW swell, and we have our eyes on a possible southern hemi swell for the 19th. Condition wise, a heavy onshore trend is about to get a bit heavier, and another negative tide is right around the corner.
Right now, the California Buoy is checking in at 4 feet with 17-second periods. Closer to the coast, the Half Moon Bay buoy is at 7 feet with 7-second periods and Cape San Martin buoy is at 9 feet with 14-second periods.
SW periods are running a long 17 seconds from 175-185 degrees, and NW wind swell is coming through with periods running only 8 seconds from 305-320 degrees.
Note that due to the long-period nature of the SW swell in the water today, there will inevitably be some variation in size between south facing breaks depending on the bathymetry of each surf spot, and its corresponding shoaling and refraction properties.
In SoCal, most south facing breaks are seeing sets in the chest to shoulder high zone with top spots, mostly south of Ventura County, picking up set waves running head high with occasional pluses. West facing spots are seeing mostly waist to at times chest high surf.
Northern California and the Central Coast are seeing waist to chest high surf most everywhere with south facing breaks pulling in some better size at times.
The tide is manageable now, but after our next SW swell rolls in Sunday, we’ll be seeing a radical tidal swing from a Full Moon…more
Water temperatures are averaging 67 degrees in San Diego, 67 in Orange County, 66 in LA, 61 in Ventura County, 62 in Santa Barbara, 55 along the central coast, and 55 in NCal.
