The Carlsbad City Council unanimously approved tonight Poseidon Resources Corp.’s proposed seawater desalination plant. The 4-0 vote concludes the local permitting process for the project, which would turn saltwater into drinking water.

The project now heads to the Regional Water Quality Control Board on Wednesday morning to seek discharge permits.

Of the 23 people that spoke at the meeting, about half were opposed to the project. But council members dismissed the opposition, saying that the plant’s critics had not brought up any new points that hadn’t already been addressed.
