I was at a meeting up in Solana Beach this morning, and I thought I would swing by a local condo conversion project for a snoop around.

I drove a short way into Carmel Valley and found my way to Del Mar Villas, a collection of a couple of hundred condo conversions just off the State Route 56.

Walking through the compact neighborhood of small one- and two-bedroom condos, what immediately struck me was the swathe of “for sale” signs plastered here there and everywhere.

I would estimate that one in every five homes had a for sale sign outside it.

Now, I was at Del Mar Villas a few months ago, looking into another story, and I remember only counting two for sale signs in the whole project.

It’s fair to say that a couple of the signs had a hint of desperation about them. One that I noticed was particularly striking. It was one of those signs you can buy at Wal Mart and the home owner had written at the top of it in block capitals “Simply Must Sell.”
