The county Board of Supervisors today authorized staff to search for expert consultants should it need outside help in stadium negotiations with the Chargers. County officials say it’s unknown how much such services would cost.
A subcommittee of two supervisors has met once with the team and plans to meet regularly with the team as it searches the county for possible stadium sites.
The North County Times had a story about the hiring of the experts today. The story included an interesting tidbit: the team might not want to leave until sometime after 2010, even though it could conceivably relocate as soon as 2008. That’s because under the terms of its contract with the city of San Diego, it has to pay off existing bond debt from renovations made to Qualcomm Stadium in the late 1990s. The longer the team waits, the more debt is paid off annually by the city.
