The San Diego County Water Authority issued an alert Saturday for homeowners and businesses to use less water through the end of the week.

If something malfunctions at one of the two plants that provide San Diego with its water, the warning will become mandatory, the authority said in a news release. That could mean a reduction or shutoff of water to large agricultural users.
