At Tuesday’s City Council meeting, Councilwoman Toni Atkins presented the organizers of San Diego Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) Pride with a resolution proclaiming this week as Pride Week in San Diego. The resolution rightly recognizes the contributions of local LGBT community members in the fields of business, religion, government, sports and the military. Easy, right? It should have been a no-brainer in this day in age. Well, not exactly.
In spite of the fact that the LGBT community has made enormous strides nationally toward acceptance and equality, sadly, the proclamation came under attack from some certain members of a fringe and radical element that opposes even slightest mention – much less the acceptance or promotion – of full and equal rights for members of the LGBT community. Shameful. To their credit, members of the Pride board responded positively.
To their credit, the City Council unanimously voted in favor of the resolution. Some members of the council, led by Council President Peters and Councilman Madaffer, came down from the dais and joined Atkins in the presentation of the proclamation. Mayor Sanders looks forward to participating in the parade on Saturday in Hillcrest.
