Thursday, Aug. 17, 2006 | It looks like the Airport Authority has jumped the gun. With the Joint Strike Fighter coming to San Diego, there will be no conversion to a joint use or solo municipal airport at Miramar. The “BRAC” will never give it up. The commission has wasted our time and money on a pipe dream. Miramar would be a great place for an airport, but it won’t happen. This idea needs to go away; we need to find a way for Lindberg to be expanded in its current location. Expand into MCRD, move the terminals, underground Pacific Highway, make Lindberg the best it can be. If there is some far out area (mountains or deserts, inland valley) let’s designate a future airport site, limit the growth there, and when future growth dictates we can then build. If our city fathers had done that we would have a reasonably close in airport ready to be built. There were all sorts of buildable sites then, but few now. Let’s plan now and not do a disservice to future generations.
