Monday, Aug. 28, 2006 | Re: “Who Am I to Tell Them to Leave,” by Scott Lewis. While illegal immigrants are illegal according to federal law, that law can change, and it should. The Bracero Program, though flawed, is a model that could be used for a better one, and it should be.
The racist element shown by the Minutemen centers on its Mexocentrism; they’re not looking for anyone else and they’ll target anybody who looks Mexican. This is utterly unjust. And until we see brigades of rednecks picking lettuce, washing dishes and filling all the other jobs they claim Mexicans are stealing, it will continue to make those neo-slavecatchers into hypocrites as well as hysterics, too.
Nazi persecutions used exactly the same tactics against the German Jews beginning in 1933; we have no need to follow the footsteps of murderous Eurolosers looking for a scapegoat by which to further their dark social, political and (anti)cultural agendas.
