I did forget to include one thing about Steve Francis’ Manhattan Institute in San Diego – its name. It will be called, Francis said, the San Diego Institute for Policy and Research.

And I had asked him what this meant about Carl DeMaio, the guy from the Performance Institute, who burst onto the scene in 2004 with his own think tank.

Was Carl not “thinking” enough or was he helping with the effort? Francis had worked pretty well with Carl in the past.

Francis:

“I respect Carl and what he tries to accomplish but this is independent of him and the models differ a bit.”

Finally, I forgot to point out that Erik Bruvold has not actually left the Mayor’s Office quite yet to run the new institute. But Francis has also hired two staffers from the Manhattan Institute to begin work now.
