City Attorney Mike Aguirre has requested that the City Auditor’s Office conduct “a thorough audit” of the Southeastern Economic Development Corp.’s affordable housing program.

City Councilmembers Tony Young and Donna Frye asked Aguirre to investigate the program last week following the publication of a special report. The article found that the agency had allowed a developer to sell homes for more than they were authorized; failed to properly oversee its affordable homes, allowing them to be sold for sizable profits without agency oversight; and had permitted an SEDC consultant to purchase and refinance one of the agency’s affordable units.

In a letter dated yesterday, Aguirre asked City Auditor John Torrell, asking that an audit not be limited to the development featured in the article, “but include any other affordable housing project in which SEDC has been involved.”
