When I first started covering business news here in San Diego some years ago, I’ll admit, I thought I would spend a lot of time interviewing proprietors of mom-and-pop stores, and teenagers starting Internet companies out of their basements.
And sure, there were a few Internet entrepreneurs and the occasional small business story, but I was truly overwhelmed at the tremendous scale of business here in San Diego. Companies that have significant market capitalization, intellectual wealth and innovations that would rival any, anywhere in the world.
Right here in sleepy little San Diego.
Take, for instance, the brain trust in the relatively limited square mileage between La Jolla, Sorrento Valley, Carmel Valley, and to stretch a little further inland, Mira Mesa. Just the people alone: some of the brightest folks alive today were drawn to San Diego by the mild climate and the chance to work for big-deal research facilities, in the areas of science, medicine, even wireless technology.
So my goal today in hosting Café San Diego is to wax on about some of the really cool things going on in San Diego business. You may not like every invention (another wireless gadget anyone?) and may be philosophically opposed to some of the research efforts (like stem cell research), but you have to concede it’s pretty incredible that so much actually gets done in a place where surf, sand and sunshine are bountiful.
And please oh please, feel free to share tidbits on your favorite San Diego business.
