The old Mission Bay landfill, which was in use until 1959, does not produce harmful pollutants to the surrounding southeast area of Mission Bay Park, according to a four-year study that the city released Friday.
The study, which was overseen by the Mission Bay Technical Advisory Committee, said that there is no significant discharge of pollutants being emitted into the bay, but that the cap placed on the now-closed landfill is very thin and susceptible to discharging landfill gases to the surface.
“It is a load off my mind, but it doesn’t mean we won’t stop working to keep remediating and keep monitoring,” said City Councilwoman Donna Frye, who represents portions of Mission Bay and called for the study in 2002.
