The Tijuana River National Estuarine Research Reserve is looking for volunteers.

If you’re curious, folks there are holding an open house Nov. 30 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the estuary visitor’s center at 301 Caspian Way in Imperial Beach.

Volunteers serve at the estuary leading nature walks, cleaning litter from beaches, restoring habitat, monitoring birds, patrolling trails and greeting guests.

For more information, call Sarah Emerson, the estuary’s volunteer coordinator, at 619/575-3614 or e-mail her at semerson@parks.ca.gov .(Sarah is the intrepid driver of the van I rode in to capture this story about a harrowing ride through Tijuana with a gun-toting police escort.)
