A pilot flying an F/A-18 at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar crashed shortly after noon, our news partner NBC 7/39 is reporting.

The pilot ejected before impact and has been located in a canyon on the base, San Diego Fire Department Spokesman Maurice Luque told NBC 7/39. The pilot’s condition was not immediately known.

The plane went down on the eastern part of the base in what was formerly Camp Elliot, Luque told the station. It started a grass fire that burned several acres. Helicopter video showed that several fire crews were fighting the fire from the ground and helicopters were dropping water on the area.
