Vista Mayor Morris Vance called to say that he resigned from the airport authority so he could spend more time on projects in his home city.

With Vista’s recent approval of a half-cent sales tax increase, Vance said, “we have a lot of projects I’m going to be involved in. I just felt I didn’t have the time to devote to the airport with all the committee meetings I’m expected to attend.”

Vance’s resignation had been rumored in late November, though he denied that he was seeking to leave the authority board. Asked what changed, Vance said: “I saw that we were getting a whole new board, I thought maybe somebody else ought to have the opportunity to serve.”

Vance said he told his fellow North County inland mayors on Monday that he wanted to step down. (He represented the cities of Vista, Escondido, San Marcos and Poway on the authority.)

The last two years of his four-year term will be filled by San Marcos Mayor Jim Desmond, a Delta pilot.
