The San Diego Police Officers Association is trying to spread this commercial around the Internet while claiming it was banned from local airwaves.

This is a major escalation in the police officers’ public relations offensive, which they began about a year ago in a calculated effort to force the mayor and City Council to raise their pay.

And their moves so far have been working. The mayor, after all, has promised police he’d raise their pay — though it’s not clear where he will get the funds to do that.

But I don’t think this commercial is appropriate. You decide.

It’s one thing to present reasoned and substantive arguments about why police deserve raises or not. This, on the other hand, is just a stunt that calls into question the confidence police have in the ability of a mature debate ending in their favor.
