The schedule for the City Council’s private session next week includes a discussion about a “potential settlement” in City Attorney Mike Aguirre’s ongoing pension lawsuit. The agenda item also proposes hiring an outside attorney whose work would be confined to the settlement issue.

When asked about the agenda item, Aguirre said it was merely in reference to Superior Court Judge Jeffrey Barton’s request that the city confer with another judge to explore mediating their dispute. The case was filed eighteen months ago and its stakes were significantly cut back in December, and Aguirre is asking the appeals court to reconsider the ruling.

So, is a settlement in our midst?

“This is just part of the long, slow process for resolving this thing, and I want to make sure council fully briefed on what Judge Barton indicated,” Aguirre said.

Stay tuned.
