I don’t know why this story isn’t getting more attention. Rob Davis broke the news about a month ago that SDG&E didn’t think it was necessary to replace the colossal South Bay Power Plant with another.

Now, the Chula Vista City Council also appears poised to give the plans to build a new power plant on the same land a vote of no confidence.

The plans to replace the power plant with a new one on the same spot aren’t dead, but the demise of the significant South Bay landmark is actually tangible. This is exhilarating, as the plant isn’t exactly a beautiful feature for the area. But you can’t just get rid of an energy source without planning for replacements.

Does this pave the way for a proposed Chargers’ football stadium on the bay? It will be very interesting to see how this pans out.
