The San Diego City Council is right now trying to decide who to nominate to the Port Commission. Councilwoman Toni Atkins just said that choosing between Steve Cushman, the current port commissioner, and Laurie Black, a consultant, was “the hardest vote I’ve had to take in my whole time in office.”

She just said she supported Black.

“I will stand up and witness and apologize to Mr. Cushman for offering support early,” Atkins said.

Update: Wow. I’ve never seen anything like that. Cushman got the nomination. How it got to that point — the sequence of City Council decisions — is extraordinary. Atkins changed her mind — violently. It was unbelievable.
