The City Council delayed a vote today on how to divvy budget power between itself and Mayor Jerry Sanders after City Attorney Mike Aguirre requested more time to review the proposed laws.

Aguirre said a March 9 memo from Councilwoman Donna Frye touched off legal questions about balancing the budget authority between the two branches, although he waited until this morning to ask for today’s vote to be postponed.

The council already approved one version of the proposal Feb. 5, but Monday’s meeting featured a competing proposal that allowed the mayor more leeway in making cuts to the budget without seeking the council’s OK. Aguirre said the senior attorneys in his office have not reached consensus on the legality of the proposals.

The council is now expected to consider the issue April 10.
