So this morning I got an e-mail from a Somali woman in Washington, D.C. about my story today. She happened to mention that her cousin and a few of her friends are police officers around the country. I asked her to send me her cousin’s phone number and gave him a call.

Somali-born Detective Daud Sheikh of the Atlanta Police Department said he was sworn in as a police officer in early 1994. That means he was a sworn officer some six years before Heibeh joined the SDPD as an officer.

On a side note, a student in the police academy in Ottawa, Canada, e-mailed me to say that there are no Somali-born officers on the force in Toronto.

Let’s see who else e-mails in.
