Wednesday, March 21, 2007 | Re: “Officer on the Street in San Diego is a Chief in Somalia,” I really enjoyed this story.

San Diegans just do not realize what a gift our immigrants and refugees are to our community. Their stories are inspiring and heartrending. All they want is a chance to succeed. I see many refugees working for Ace Parking and in our hospitals. I cannot imagine what it would be like to be sent to another country for resettlement after leaving my own because of political, economic, or religious persecution.

Learning a new language would be daunting enough, without all the cultural accommodations that must be made. Our daughter teaches photography to middle school age refugee youth through the Aja Project. She hears the stories too and marvels at their resilience and courage.
