City Councilman Brian Maienschein plans to announce tomorrow a proposal that would enact a zero-tolerance policy for graffiti taggers. The councilman said in a press release that the ordinance would “ensure every tagger has automatic mandatory penalties with no exemptions.”

More from the statement:

(Maienschein) will also call for the City to no longer treat graffiti as “obnoxious” but as a crime that is often connected to gang activity and causes financial damages to law-abiding San Diegans’ property.

Tagging is part of a natural progression to gang activity. To end the cycle of gang recruitment, the City must deter juveniles and young adults from getting involved in gang activities like graffiti.

Maienschein’s district includes the communities of Miramar, Sorrento Valley, Rancho Bernardo, Scripps Ranch and Rancho Peñasquitos.
