Thursday, April 12, 2007 | Scott Lewis is right on regarding Fiesta Island. I worked long and hard with the city to gain additional leash-free areas in Council Districts 1, 2, 5 and 6 to little avail. We were always told we had Fiesta Island. Last trip home I went to Doyle near my old home and it was too small and muddy.

One thing Lewis didn’t mention that I did in my testimony before the City Council’s Land Use and Housing Committee meeting several years ago is that Fiesta Island is uniquely San Diegan. Visitors go to Balboa Park, Cabrillo Monument et al and San Diegans go to Fiesta Island.

I’ve requested of Councilwoman Donna Frye that if Fiesta Island is to be semi-developed (and I hope it is not), every inch of leash-free area lost be parceled to local parks starting with District 1, where Doyle Park is not enough.

This is an important enough issue to me that I’ve supported San Diego’s parks for years, served as a vice president of Friends of San Diego’s Parks Foundation and donated funds as well. Plus, I’m monitoring this issue with a little help from my San Diego friends, from Scotland.

Please keep Fiesta Island the weird unspoiled paradise that it is for us locals.

Thank you.
