The firefighters will not get a raise in the coming year, despite the pleas of some City Council members who were looking to hike their pay by 2 percent.

Council President Scott Peters and Councilmembers Toni Atkins, Jim Madaffer and Ben Hueso supported a salary increase, but they fell short of the five votes needed to grant the raise. Councilmembers Kevin Faulconer, Tony Young, Brian Maienschein and Donna Frye voted against it.

In addition to the wage freeze, the contract Mayor Jerry Sanders and the council imposed on City Firefighters Local 145 will overhaul their healthcare benefits.

Check back later for more on today’s decision.
