Councilman Kevin Faulconer came back from his vacation last week with the signs of sun.

Some big sunglasses those were.

His vacation, though, didn’t quite spare him from having to decide whether he would support the firefighters that helped get him elected — and give them a raise — or the mayor.

Had two of his colleagues not skipped last week’s meeting as well, he would have gotten out of it: “Sorry guys, but I just had to go to the Caribbean.”

So Tuesday, he had a tough decision to make. And he made a choice. He didn’t try to claim he supported both sides. He voted against the firefighters raise and took the grief.

I still think there’s no excuse for a member of the council to miss big meetings when 15 weeks of the year are set aside for them to travel as they please.

But I can’t give Faulconer any more grief for avoiding the issue. He’s got enough people — mostly angry firefighters — to worry about.
