Wednesday, May 2, 2007 | I think we are very lucky with this mayor on several counts: he wants to cut the cost of the way the city has done business in the past, solve the pension issue and let the courts decide on legal culpability … on top of which he is at least approachable on environmental issues. We absolutely had to have the first to dig our way out of a fiscal hole. When we get the plan in place to heal ourselves we cannot help but deal with the sewer system and the enormous matter of our future water supply. A tax increase will then be at least thinkable to cover the big environmental issues and having a mayor willing to listen is essential.

If we had elected an extremist on either side we would still have no hope of returning this city to functioning sensibility. Our record as voters is certainly not good, but in this case we may have lucked out and done it right.
