Tuesday, May 8, 2007 | Re: San Diego City Schools Superintendent Carl Cohn’s honest comments about the flawed and punitive federal No Child Left Behind legislation and about the blame-and-distortion tactics of the damaging previous local school administration: only a confident man, a seasoned educator and a humanist would have the guts to tell the truth as Cohn did.
Can Americans face the dire realities of so many children’s lives and embrace the importance of excellent universal public education? Can we commit to spending domestically whatever — whatever — is necessary to make every child a learner and a Chamber of Commerce-style “success?”
I hope to live to see the day.
