Responding to your inquiries on caring for our returning veterans sent to me by e-mail:

To Gene, who asked about providing for veterans in need of burial space: You probably have heard about the Fort Rosecrans Annex at Miramar. This facility will provide burial space for up to 200,000 veterans. The VA, working with the Marine Corps, has focused on a 323 acres site near the intersection of Nobel Drive and I-805. Current projections are that the first burials will take place in 2009.

To Theresa, who noted that we must care not just for the new veterans but for those who served previously, especially those suffering from Gulf War Illness: I couldn’t agree more! We must implement the lessons learned from the experiences of those who served in previous wars to benefit all veterans. My concern today is that is not always done and my belief is that this is not just the government’s problem, but something all of us are responsible for.
