A suburb of Dallas added itself to the list of cities that have tried to ban landlords from renting to illegal immigrants.

Voters in Farmers Branch, Texas, overwhelmingly approved an ordinance Saturday that, beginning next Tuesday, would fine landlords $500 a day for violating the ban, according to the Dallas Morning News.

The city became the first in the state of Texas to enact such a law. However, others throughout the nation, such as Escondido, have used laws against landlords to take up the largely federal issue of immigration in a local context.

Escondido abandoned its law last year in a settlement with the American Civil Liberties Union.
