Local workers and advocacy groups are meeting today to kick off a coalition focusing on healthcare issues, in conjunction with a statewide alliance called It’s OUR Healthcare!.

Groups participating in today’s meeting (already underway) include the San Diego and Imperial Counties Labor Council, several labor unions, the San Diego Democratic Party and the Center on Policy Initiatives.

A press release from the Center on Policy Initiatives anticipated a crowd of community members who would tell personal stories about struggles with healthcare, discuss the reform proposals on the table, (like Governor Schwarzenegger’s, presented earlier this year) and “send a message to Sacramento” by including their personal stories in “get-well cards” to lawmakers.

Promotional materials for the event claimed more than 400,000 people in San Diego County and nearly 7 million statewide lack access to healthcare.
