The City Council finalized its ban on superstores that sell groceries and total 90,000 square feet or more today, moving along the law to Mayor Jerry Sanders, who said he will likely veto it.
Council President Scott Peters and Councilmembers Toni Atkins, Tony Young, Donna Frye and Ben Hueso voted for the legislation. Councilmen Kevin Faulconer, Brian Maienschein and Jim Madaffer voted against it.
If the council overrides the mayor’s veto, which it can do with the same five affirmative votes that were needed to pass the ban, Wal-Mart spokesman Aaron Rios said the company has not ruled out putting the decision to voters in an election next year.
