Mayor Jerry Sanders is scheduled tomorrow to announce a regulation that would force all city vehicles to be immediately turned off when not “actively engaged in providing City services.”
The measure is being billed as an attempt to regulate the release of greenhouse gases coming from idling city vehicles. According to the Mayor’s Office, the program is already in place at the Miramar Landfill, where diesel-powered equipment is common. It says the program has reduced emissions and saved more than $2 million in fuel and service costs.
My colleague Rob Davis recently wrote this story examining the mayor’s complex environmental record.
