Monday, June 11, 2007 | Gosh, the superintendent’s public relations consultant for San Diego Unified Schools is hired for $130,000 and together they changed the district’s motto without board approval. I’m shocked, shocked!

Let’s keep things in perspective. When ex- Superintendent Alan Bersin was riding roughshod over local public schools, he had a full-time public relations/communications staff of 22 people which cost many millions of dollars a year. At taxpayer expense, that staff became the personal media-machine for the publicity-loving superintendent himself as much as for any school-related purpose. And when needed during board election seasons, Bersin additionally hired Ford Gateway/ Disney public relations honcho John Spelich of Del Mar to do campaign season dirty-work, using a special private slush fund that had been set up in Bersin’s name at the San Diego Foundation.
